About eBook

eBook Description

I wanted to like this book, and I wanted to like the hero and heroine, but I couldn't. For the first third of the story, the hero is quite clear: he doesn't want the heroine, a young woman he courted, proposed to, and then goaded into calling off their engagement by going on a public outing with his mistress. He doesn't want Eleanor, but he doesn't want anyone else to have her. He was quite explicit in that selfish desire. It was really, really hard for me to feel any sort of sympathy for Damon whatsoever, and it wasn't for a lack of trying.

In addition to that, the author tells us over and over how spirited and lively Eleanor is. Those two words are used constantly to describe her. Constantly. And yet, reading the story, I didn't get that feeling at all. She is so weak when it comes to the hero - right from the start. He broke off their engagement - well, got her to do it - and then disappeared for 3 years, and the very first night that he's back, she lets him kiss her. I groaned and rolled my eyes constantly through their affectionate scenes, because all I got from them was that he was selfish and aggressive and manipulative, and she was a weak, wilting little flower. It didn't feel romantic at all - it just felt icky.

And her attempts at seduction, per the novel's misleading description, are just uncomfortable. No, thank you. Basically, she teases him as much as she can and always leaves him wanting, and then later in the book, before they've resolved anything emotionally, they're about to get it on and she senses that he doesn't trust her to actually consummate their marriage - because she's purposely been teasing him - and she gravely reflects that she'll have to win back his trust. WTF?!

The book is filled with ridiculous things like that, things I couldn't ignore despite the fact that I wanted to like this story and its characters. This was the first Nicole Jordan book I read, and will probably be the last. I didn't find it romantic at all. It was a chore to get through and I have no idea why I forced myself to finish.

I wanted to like this story, but every page just made me angry. Really. Every page.
